Meet The Team

President
Jason Bergquist
Hi, I'm Jason and the President of New Buffalo Youth Sports. I am responsible for overseeing operations and ensuring that we are providing sports opportunities for the youth of our community.
I joined New Buffalo Youth Sports in 2019 as the Softball and Football Director. A year later I took on the role of President.
I grew up in Northwest Indiana and played sports throughout my primary and secondary school years. My favorite sport is basketball, favorite hobby is coaching, and my favorite food is steak! I am a father of 4 and have lived in New Buffalo for the last 8 years. I am committed to making sure our youth always have sports available and that they have the best experience ever.

Vice President
Mark Nikkel
Mark has been serving on our board for 10 years.

Treasurer
Michelle Wolfe
I have been on the New Buffalo Sports board for 5 years serving as a board member, Secretary and Treasurer.
As a life long sports fan, I do this to make sure the kids in the community have the opportunity to play sports and provide lessons they will take throughout their lives.

Secretary
Karie Grott
My family and I have been residents of beautiful New Buffalo for eight years. I enjoy being a stay-at-home mom to our four amazing children. We love nature walks, fishing, hunting, swimming, kayaking, baking, painting, gardening and sports!

I attended a Christian Academy for twelve years where I found my love for sports. I ran cross country from first through sixth grade. In middle school and high school I played volleyball, basketball, ran the 100 meter dash, 100 meter relay, 200 yard dash, 200 meter relay, and competed in shot put, long jump and high jump.

I have been on the NBYS board officially for 3 years, but have had the pleasure of helping with softball, football and cheer for several years. I enjoy fundraising, updating our website, making posts for our social media accounts and much more!
Sports are a great way to build leadership, endurance and character in children. I am proud to be a Bison and look forward to continue helping NBYS progress in any way that I can.

Basketball Director
Billy Breen
My name is Billy Breen and I am a proud member of the New Buffalo Youth Sports Board. I wanted to join the organization because I am a sports enthusiast who has been around athletics as a player and coach most of my life. Aligning with the vision of the NBYSB, I want to do my part to ensure New Buffalo has a strong youth sports program for generations to come. My wife and I have a daughter at the elementary school that loves to participate in the variety of sports offered by the school. I, too, love playing a wide variety of sports such 16” softball and disc golf but basketball is my passion. I played throughout high school and college and enjoy cheering on IU and the Chicago Bulls. Outside of competing, I love to be outside enjoying the mountains, woods, and Lake Michigan. If not outside, you can probably catch me enjoying stand-up comedy.

Trustee
Nicole Kehoe
Hi, my name is Nicole Kehoe, currently the softball commissioner for New Buffalo Youth Sports. I am a life long resident of New Buffalo. I have been involved with sports my whole life, playing softball, volleyball and basketball. I currently still play softball as an adult on multiple co-ed teams. I have coached 8u softball for the last two years. I enjoy showing and teaching the girls the fundamentals of softball. My greatest joy is watching the girls improve as the season goes on and how excited they get when they accomplish their goal.

Interim Baseball Commissioner
Patrick Kennedy
My name is Patrick Kennedy and I have been serving on the New Buffalo Youth Sports board for a couple of years now. I have two boys that enjoy playing sports and hanging out with their friends. I grew up in a small town in Iowa where baseball was almost its own religion. Turns out a few decades later, I really enjoy coaching youth baseball also. I have coached at both the 8U and 10U levels the last few years and hope to continue to do so in the future.
I joined the board to lend a helping hand to an organization that I believe in and serves to teach our youth competition, cooperation, respecting authority, and teamwork. Sports are also a great way to show children how to win while respecting their opponents and learn from losing by moving on to the next challenge.

Ex-Officio Member
Dan Peterson
I am an ex-officio (nonvoting) member of New Buffalo Sports board; I was appointed to this position as a representative of my employer, The Pokagon Fund, where I’ve worked since February 2020. I am interested in ensuring that NBS’s programs are accessible and available to as many families in the area as possible now and in the future. I grew up in rural Mid-Michigan where I participated in sports during my childhood and high school years. I understand how important involvement in sports can be to the social, cultural, individual, and athletic development of a child. Currently, I work in New Buffalo and my oldest daughter attends New Buffalo Area Schools. I really enjoy working with groups and individuals who are engaged and committed to making their communities great places to live – that’s why I am excited to work with NBS!

Jeff was a bench coach that assisted the UW-LaCrosse baseball program for 2 additional years after his playing days were done. After school, Jeff got an IT job with a utility company where he continues to be employed. Jeff and his family moved to New Buffalo in 2013 to escape the Chicago rat race. Trustee
Chris Thun
Hello, my name is Chris Thun. I have been a part of the New Buffalo Youth Sports Board since 2017. I grew up on the north side of Chicago where I played football, basketball and baseball while growing up. Baseball emerged as my favorite sport and I eventually pitched at a small college in Illinois. I moved up to New Buffalo in 2004 to be with my future wife and step-daughter, and continue to grow as a family. Our son Lucas was born in 2009 and now he participates in several sports for the NB schools and community. I have been involved with coaching in the area since 2013 and I absolutely love it. Sharing my love and knowledge of sports with the youth in our town, and helping them grow into wonderful student-athletes is something that I am very passionate about.
